tabifolk (tabifolk.com) is an accessible travel community built on BuddyBoss. Members join destination and topic groups and ask their questions there, where people who know the place can answer. A post on someone's own timeline hardly gets seen.
A lot of communities work this way. Reddit is the best-known example: you post into a community, not onto your profile, and the + button asks you to pick a community first.
For communities like ours, it would help to have a setting that makes posting group-only, so members can't post on their timeline and can only post in groups. With that turned on, a new post would go like this:
This should work the same in the app and on the web. It could be an option that's off by default, so nothing changes for sites that use timelines.
At the moment we turn off timeline posting for members, which leaves the main feed with no post box. Members have to go to one of their groups first and post from there. That's an extra step, and a lot of people never find it. We built a workaround on the web with our own group chooser, but there's no way to do the same in the app.
A + button that walks you through choosing a group is much easier to use, and people already know it from Reddit. It would get more people posting, and I think plenty of other group-based communities would use it too.
