Currently, BuddyBoss Membership only processes payments directly through Stripe, bypassing WooCommerce entirely. I'd like to request native WooCommerce support as an alternative checkout/payment layer for Memberships.
Routing membership sales through WooCommerce instead of a direct Stripe integration would unlock the entire WooCommerce extension ecosystem, which already solves problems that a standalone Stripe checkout can't:
Legal compliance β In several countries businesses are legally required to provide downloadable PDF invoices for online sales. Plugins like PDF Invoices & Packing Slips for WooCommerce handle this automatically; there's no equivalent for a bare Stripe integration.
Payment gateway choice β Not every country or business is best served by Stripe. WooCommerce supports a wide range of local/regional gateways (for example Stancer, a French payment provider which has less fees than Stripe) as well as WooCommerce PayPal Payments, giving site owners the flexibility to match the payment method to their market instead of being locked into one processor.
Social commerce β With Meta for WooCommerce and TikTok for WooCommerce, memberships could be sold directly through Instagram and Facebook Shops or TikTok, extending reach well beyond the WordPress site itself. This is a channel that's essentially unreachable with a direct Stripe-only setup.
Unified commerce stack β Many BuddyBoss sites (including membership-based schools, communities, and course platforms like mine) already run a WooCommerce store for merchandise, digital products, or event tickets. Being forced to run memberships through a separate Stripe pipeline means duplicated reporting, customer data split across two systems, and no unified order history. WooCommerce as the checkout layer would consolidate everything into one dashboard, one set of reports, one customer record.
Ecosystem leverage β WooCommerce has thousands of extensions covering taxes (EU VAT, US sales tax), accounting sync (Xero, QuickBooks), multi-currency, coupons, and CRM. Building all of that natively into BuddyBoss would be redundant when WooCommerce already provides it as a mature, actively maintained standard.
This isn't a niche need β it's a common pattern for any BuddyBoss site that treats memberships as one product line among several. Making WooCommerce a first-class payment option would let site owners choose their payment stack rather than being tied to Stripe specifically, without BuddyBoss needing to rebuild invoicing, regional payments, or social selling from scratch.
If you're running a BuddyBoss community and have run into the same limitation, an upvote here would help get this prioritized π
